SBEN Owners Section

Owners have a different perspective than breeders. Some owners show their cats, others prefer to allow their pint-sized, four-legged royalty to stay home and just be a pet. Both are fine and both have accompanying areas of interest. Because we owners are diverse in our interests you'll find a spattering of this and a smudge of that located in this section.
We'll do our best to reference like-minded articles in other areas of the site as well, and you can always refer to the ARCHIVES to see a complete listing of all articles and website addresses found in each issue of the SBEN.

Do you have an article that you'd like to contribute to the SBEN's Owners Section? If so, please email Kay.

Vocabulary Evolution

by Carlee Marrer-Tising

There seems to have been a vocabulary evolution in the companion animal world in recent years, especially if that companion is a Sphynx cat! There are many taboo words these days. We have to deal with a phenomenon known as ―political correctness, something past generations of English speakers did not have to be concerned with. The words ―pet, ―owner, ―buy and similar ones seem to have become very problematic words among companion animal lovers.

Animal rights groups tell us we should not call our pets ―pets, even though this word has exclusively positive meanings, also when translated into other languages. According to Webster, the word ―pet is a Scottish word originally meaning ―small. This purportedly discriminatory word refers to 1. ―an animal that is tamed or domesticated and kept as a companion or treated with fondness and 2. ―a person who is treated with particular affection or indulgence; favorite; darling. Not being able to call a pet a ―pet makes writing about pets somewhat difficult! Vocabulary Evolution!

In researching for my various articles, reading posts on the various lists, articles in magazines and books, I have noticed that people are more and more using vocabulary and turns of speech which were not used at all by former generations of animal lovers, and that they avoid certain words which used to be a matter of course. Just to give a few examples, let's have another look at the word, "pet." The word is often accompanied by the words, "just a as in "just a pet," which implies that the "pet" is either no great beauty or is not worth much money. And yet when we look at the definition, we see that a pet is an animal kept for companionship and enjoyment as opposed to the livestock, laboratory animals or working animals kept for economic reasons.

Are we cat and dog lovers circumventing this issue by calling our ―pets our ―kids and our ―babies instead of our pets, or is our perception of our animals changing radically? And do we Sphynx lovers even substitute the word ―cat with ―kid and ―baby because we no longer perceive our animals to be ―mere animals? In cards, letters, and e-mails, people send special greetings to "the kids," meaning, in many cases, the cats. Many people refer to themselves as the cat's "mom, mum, mama, or mommy," and "dad, daddy, or papa." Interestingly, I almost never see the words "mother" or "father" used in this way. Furthermore, instead of referring to the cat's "owner"--nowadays almost considered an insult, if not a heinous crime, and, most definitely, politically incorrect--many people use the words, "adopter" and/or "human." Some people jokingly call themselves the "can opener" (this is used a great deal in the German language!) or the cat's servant or even slave, albeit willing servant or slave.

It also seems to be in very bad taste in some circles today to talk about "buying" a cat or kitten. Instead, we ―place them if we are breed-ers, and we ―adopt them if we are buyers (rescuers adopt them, too, of course, but this is easier to understand and accept for the average person (who is not an animal person).

We talk about our "girls" and our "boys" more often than we call them females and males, and referring to a cat as "it" seems nothing short of totally ignorant and gauche! Going hand in hand with this phenomenon in the language used to refer to and talk about our dogs, cats, and most particularly, our Sphynx, is the way we treat them. We coddle and spoil them as a matter of course, we wrap them up in their own little (designer) blankets, we tuck them into bed (usually our own bed!), we put little sweaters and dresses, coats and jackets, and even pajamas on them, we sometimes put jewelry on them, and we completely adore them!Brittany Gobbles daughter loves Sphynx!

A lot of us who have multi-cat households even sacrifice vacation and holiday trips just so we don't have to be without them. If we have only one or two, they, of course, accompany us on our trips. We willingly sacrifice visits to museums, concerts, tours of famous, old buildings and the like, because we don‘t want to leave our precious darlings behind in the hotel. If we decide we "need" a second cat, we don't get her or him for ourselves! We get this new cat or kitten for our cat! "She needs a little kitty friend!" we tell ourselves and anyone else who wants to know. Now while I would be the first to agree that a lot of this is not new behavior, I do observe it even more with the "owners" (!) of Sphynx than with those of a lot of other breeds. Maybe these naked cats, having no fur, seem more vulnerable to us or even more like us? Why else do so many of us have stickers and posters proclaiming, "If it's got fur, it's just a cat!"
And this thinking does not stop with adults, either! Brittney Gobble reports the following behavior of her little 10-month old daughter:
" We have haired outcross kitties and she pretty much ignores them. But when a hairless walks by her she yells kit-ty‘ (I attached a picture of her excited face)! It is so funny! I love that she thinks hairless are the true‘ kitties."

Still another Sphynx owner on one of the Sphynx lists I subscribe to put things in perspective when she reminded some of the people who were not only pampering their Sphynx, but also trying to keep them safe from normal feline activity, saying, ―and even though our Sphynx are quite different from other cats, they are still cats!”

I must admit that I have taken this a step further. Sometimes, when people tell me my cats are ugly or unnatural or the like, I simply tell them that a Sphynx is the primal cat before fur was added to hide her beautiful figure. This may not convince them, but at least it gets a laugh.

Love at First Touch...Anubis True

by Terry True, M.D.

I had decided to surprise my wife, Sharron, with a cat on our first Christmas together. However, I had no idea what breed she might prefer. She had always been the guardian of rescues and is quite passionate about animals in need. When I asked what type of cat she might want, she said she was not sure.

Sharron bought a book on cat breeds from the book store and we sat down and read through it together. When we came to the Sphynx picture, we looked at each other and said, ―What an unusual cat! Where could we ever find one of these?

The Birmingham Cat Show was coming to town toward the end of January so we decided to attend. We looked at the many beautiful cats in attendance and were awed by many breeds. We finally came to the Sphynx breed and met Alison Lindsey. We asked her many questions about the Sphynx breed and she was very informative and gracious. She picked up one of her Sphynx and handed it to us. We immediately knew this was the breed of cat we had to have. It was love at first touch.

A few weeks later, we went to Alison‘s condo to pick out our new Sphynx. We knew nothing about showing cats and did not think we would ever have an interest in doing so. We were simply looking for a companion and pet. A little pink Sphynx that kept running around the room and looking at me with big blue eyes that were seemingly bottomless. It was as though he had chosen me. While I thought I'd come to pick out a gift for Sharron, this little boy seemed to be calling my name. Alison said that if we wanted him, he could go with us. She had called him "Pinkie". . .I called him Anubis.. This was the start of a lifetime of adventure.

Anubis gave us 6 years of unconditional love, crazy antics and countless purrs. The picture I've used in this article was submitted to America Online and received enough votes to win America Online's Pet of the Month for July, 2004. He was a Daddy‘s boy, and I still grieve his loss deeply.

He died on May 2nd, 2008, when a valve in his heart became incompetent and he went into heart failure. There will never be another Anubis - he was one of a kind. For me, he was the embodiment of everything good about the Sphynx. My hope is that every Sphynx lover will find their "Anubis". This special boy started our love affair with the Sphynx breed and we are forever grateful.

What would life have been without him?

When Did I Know You Were Daddy`s Boy?
A Tribute to Le L'Amitie Anubis Nefercat True by Terry True

Anubie TrueWas it when I saw your small kitten frame across the room and you gave me the "silent" meow? Was it when you pressed your little face, with its wet nose, into the palm of my hand insisting that I pet your head?

Was it when the vet said you could not live from an overwhelming Bordetella infection and yet you fought back to be the cat of a lifetime. Was it when you snuggled to my side and snored softly in your sleep?
When did I know you were Daddy's boy? Was it the time you seemed to know the feelings of despair I felt and yet offered unconditional acceptance? Was it when you dried my tears with the soft bridge of your nose?

Was it when you proved that despite your furry tail and fuzzy flanks, you were the best "show cat" I never showed? Was it when you nipped at the other cat's ears because they were too close to your Daddy-cat?

When did I know you were Daddy’s boy? Was it in the stillness of the dark night that I could hear your purr of assurance that all was well? Was it when I read the news-paper and you sat on the back of my neck with your tail flicking across my face?

Was it when I saw you sitting at the end of the bed, pouting that I was petting another cat and looking over your shoulder to be sure I was watching? Was it when you caressed my face with both paws and made me know that you saw deep into my soul?

When did I know you were Daddy’s boy? Yours' was a lifetime of love and you were the love of a lifetime. You were Daddy's "Nuber-kitty" and the joy of my heart. When did I know you were my boy?
Always and forever . . . I know I'll always be your Daddy-cat.

KETAMINE - What you should know:

by Kay Marshall - in honour of Gimli Gil-Galad

Ketamine information is provided to aid other Sphynx owners, breeders, and most of all, veterinarians.

Ketamine is the most common—and cheapest—anesthesia used by vets today.
In an online Q & A column renowned Virginia veterinarian, Mike Richards, writes, Ketamine causes hyper-tension during anesthetic recovery and it is possible that the detrimental effects attributed to Ketamine may be due primarily to cases of undiagnosed cardio-myopathy in cats undergoing anesthetic procedures. These cats would be especially sensitive to hyperten-sion and the increase in blood pressure induced by Ketamine is supposed to be pretty significant in some cats.”

But for those who choose to err on the side of caution, take heart, for there are wonderful Say NO to Ketamine - use Isoflurane or Sevoflurane instead.substitutions that may be an option for any procedure that your Sphynx might need. The bonus is that they do not have the side-effects found with injectible induction agents like Ketamine or its derivatives (Imalgen, Clorketam, Zoletil, Telazol, and Halothane gas).

Two options that adamantly request — read demand— are the gases Isoflourane or Sevoflurane. Our new vet now has a large sticker on all of our medical folders that clearly states – WARNING - ALLERGIC REACTION. DO NOT ADMINISTER KETAMINE. USE ISO or SEVO INSTEAD.

If you are interested in following this story I would like to direct you to the home of my current Ketamine Blog – Gimmie’s Fishes – located at www.gimmiesfishes.org - Here you will find a plethora of helpful articles, documents, website links, grief and loss help, and much more. Please note that the research is an ongoing project. The goal, of the website author, is to locate and gather documented cases or notations regarding Ketamine deaths or warnings.

If you've experienced the loss of a Sphynx, or Devon, that you suspect or can confirm was due to Ketamine, please email me with your story. I am, again, trying to document cases in order to compile statistics within the Sphynx community.

POEMS

Bubaskis
by Jean Dresen

Trusted creature, trusted pet.. warm across my lap you stretch.
No soul have you the experts say,no karmic goal to lead the way.
Just a creature placed on earth for souls like me, is what I've heard.

If that is true, and who am I to challenge greater men than I, Then why I ask, in disbelief, do you so often seem to be so well aware of every thought and well tuned-in to feelings caught.
So sensitive to swings in moods, and quick to recognize the fools.

You have the depth and feelings lost by many human counterparts.. So yes, my little wrinkled pet, I do dispute the experts yet.

I do believe you have a soul and we, the humans, have been told a false assumption, just in case we might be threatened by your race.

QUOTES

“My Grace's favorite game is thief. She loves to steal food off my plate and is really fast at snatch and grab. She couldn't figure out what to do with the snap peas and broccoli because she sure didn't want to eat it. And the shrimp fought back but she won in the end”
Barbara Currie

MY kitten looks for bugs on the ceiling. When she spies one, she comes to wherever I am, meows, and then runs, looking back over her shoulder to see if I'm following (as told). Then, when we get to the spot where the bug is, she stops, looks up, and meows again so I'll lift her up and she can swat the bug off the ceiling. I swear this is true...this kitten tells me what to do ALL the time! She does it when she's hungry, too.
She'll find me wherever I am, run into the room to her empty food bowl, look at it, look at me and meow. I'm learning fast! She's probably very pleased the progress her human is making!

Finly- Hide the bra/underwear till company comes over, then bring it to the living room to show off the prize.
JAK! - Crumb Snatchers, except he drags off your whole steak/chicken if you’re not looking!
Nebi - Counter Cleaner, he just cannot stand to see anything left unattended on the counter....how many full glasses of anything has he knocked off to the floor! He also doubles as a straw fetcher....yes, he can pull it out of a soda drink!
Bare - Best kitchen helper, he knows olive oil, and how to use it! Always fun till it hits the kitchen floor, breaks, and oil is all on the floor!
Nyla- Secretrial Skills, just the Sphynx to help you attend to your pens/pencils! She truly fixates on any writing instrument, and waits patiently till it's laid down on the table...then it's hers!

The Nun’s game –
“Gallop full speed from one end of the room, leap onto Tom’s shoulder and then fly through the air and slam into the patio door to try and grab June Bugs. Fall to the floor and then bounce up and down like a rabid Parson Terrier, <boing boing boing> every time she sees any flying bug.”
